Award-winning films put donkeys in the spotlight

Donkeys are capturing hearts worldwide, thanks to award-winning films like The Banshees of Inisherin and the upcoming EO, which are both in the running for Oscar nominations tomorrow.

Award-winning films put donkeys in the spotlight

Here at The Donkey Sanctuary, we know how amazing donkeys are, but this long-overdue moment in the spotlight presents an opportunity to elevate the status of donkeys in the public eye, and to shine a light on the plight of donkeys around the world.

If you’d like to speak with one of our donkey experts and hear why these films represent a significant shift in the way donkeys are portrayed and how they offer a deeper insight to these highly intelligent animals, we would be delighted to arrange an interview for you.

Hot on the heels of its success in the Golden Globe Awards, The Banshees of Inisherin has been nominated for several BAFTAs, as well as being hotly tipped for an Oscar, while EO, which took home the Jury Prize in Cannes last year, is also expected to be included when the Oscar nominations are made on 24 January.

Both films are a celebration of donkeys and their enduring relationship with humans, while also exposing their vulnerability and some of the many and varied challenges they face across the world.

Faith Burden, Executive Director of Equine Operations at The Donkey Sanctuary said: “The feature film EO is beautifully shot and offers a rare opportunity to view the world from a donkey’s perspective.

“The portrayal and billing of the donkey as the central character clearly demonstrates the film-maker’s deep appreciation of these sensitive and intelligent animals.”
