The Horse Trust has welcomed new recruit Maryland (Mary), who joins the charity after a successful career serving at the Royal Mews.

Cleveland Bay Mary was one of the horses used to pick up high commissioners and ambassadors presenting their credentials to Her Majesty The Queen.

While serving, she worked as a State ceremonial carriage horse, taking part in many important events such as State visits, State Openings of Parliament and Trooping the Colour. She also pulled the carriage on many occasions with fellow Horse Trust resident, Sydney.

“It’s lovely how so many of our residents can be reunited with former friends during their retirements with us,” said a Horse Trust spokesman.

Mary is now 15 years old and stands at 16.2hh. She was described to the charity as a little “tricky” but “really gentle and lovely”.

“So far from what we’ve seen of her she is an incredibly soft and friendly mare,” they added. “Mary arrived with us for her retirement alongside Windsor Grey Storm and we’re excited to get to know both Mews horses more.”

“Welcome, Mary and we hope you have a long and happy retirement with us!”
